Britnie is a junior at Charlotte High school. She is a believer in being your self. Here is Britnie’s “This I Believe” essay.
This I Believe
I believe in being yourself, it is the most important belief a person can have. Being yourself is essential to being happy. To be yourself is to be unique. To be unique is to be an individual. To be an individual is to be you.
Would life be easier if everyone was the same? To me I believe it is just the opposite. If everyone was the same, then life would be a lot more complicated and boring. People need to be different; we need personality and personal style. I once read a book called The Giver by Lois Lowry, and it gave me an idea of what life would be like if it were all planned out and the same for everyone. In this book, these people all lived in a community where everyone was the same age, had the same birthday and were appointed a job when they were born. They all lived life the same day by day and were afraid of the outside world. I would never want to live a life like that.
The variety of personalities, race, and ethnicity make the world interesting. The different choices people make, good and bad are what make people interesting. Not everyone succeeds in life, not everyone makes mistakes that ruin their life, but that is what makes you, you. No matter if you have a black Mohawk, or long blonde hair, No matter if you snort when you laugh, or just chuckle softly, no matter what anyone says or does, I believe in being yourself.
I hope you enjoyed Britnie’s speech on believing in being yourself.

I really liked your blog and thought it was well written. I really liked your first paragragh because I thought it mad a lot of sense and I can understand what you were talking about. I agree that everyone should just be themselves and not try to be something that they are not.

Dear Britnie,
I enjoyed your message, “This I Believe,” because you wrote about what you really believe in. It’s like your giving advice. One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is: “If everyone was the same, then life would be a lot more complicated and boring.” I think this is true because people need to have different personalities so life could be more fun.
Another sentence that I liked was “The different choices people make, good and bad are what make people interesting.” I think this is true because even though we have criminals in this world, there still different from us so that’s okay. It makes the world more interesting.
I do agree with you that no matter what you look like or do, your still yourself. One reason I say this is because you can’t change your personality for somebody. Then you won’t be yourself.
Thanks for your writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because you write meaningful blogs.

Dear Britnie,
I really enjoyed reading your “This I Believe” essay cuz it really speaks the truth.
One sentence that you wrote that stands out to me the most is “To be an individual is to be you.” I think this is a fantastic messsage that you are sending about being true to yourself.
Another sentence that I liked was “If everyone was the same, then life would be a lot more complicated and boring.” This stood out to me cuz thats something I always hear when people ask why everyones different. I agree fully with this message you are trying to send. The world I BELIEVE would be sooooo boring if everyone was the same.
I seariously agree with everything you wrote in this essay. It was really fun to read as well.
Thanks for writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next cuz this was a great piece.

I respect the fact the you are willing to step up and claim your independence. There are so many young women who still believe there is only one way to dress, think, etc. And of course I loved that literature had an affect on you. Way to go!

I really enjoyed this podcast and agree with a lot. I know of a lot of people who are “unique” in there own way and get made fun of, but some of those people are the nicest people you will ever meet and that being yourself no matter what is always the best thing to do.

yes! i totally agree with you britnie. it seems like many people in todays world try and be something their not. I feel that it is extremely important to simply being yourself. I thought that it was interesting how u said life would be complicated and boring if we were all the same. it doesnt seem like those two words would generally work together but i totally understand what you are saying in this case, and i agree with you. nicely done.

I agree that the world would be a boring place if everyone was the same. Being yourself is one of the most important things that a person can do. It’s ridiculous when people try to be someone that their not just to fit into a certain group of people.

I really like what you had to say! I agree that it is really important to be yourself and that it is what makes you, you! I also read the book The Giver about everyone being the same and I thought the same thing of how I would never want to be the same as everyone else. Your life would just be boring, there would not be any excitement in your life.

Britnie,
I really enjoyed you “This I Believe” essay. I really like how you connected your essay to another story. I just finished reading “The Giver” and the entire time I was reading it, I was thinking how boring their community must be. I agree that it is important to be yourself and individuality is a great thing. Nicely done.
